Texas Voting to Update Cannabis laws.

Texas House of Representatives is set to vote on a medical marijuana bill next week that could provide an alternative to opioids for patients suffering from chronic pain. This legislation, proposed by Rep. Stephanie Klick (R), also seeks to replace the THC cap under the state’s existing limited medical cannabis law.

After being reviewed by the House Public Health Committee last month, the bill has now been scheduled for a floor debate and vote on Tuesday, April 11, following its approval by the Calendars Committee.

The proposed law would replace the one percent THC cap for cannabis oil with a volumetric dose of 10 milligrams. It would also add a new qualifying condition for low-THC marijuana products, namely chronic pain for which a physician would otherwise prescribe an opioid.

If approved, the legislation would also permit regulators at the Department of State Health Services to approve additional debilitating medical conditions to qualify patients for the cannabis program through rulemaking.

It is noteworthy that this bill's introduction comes shortly after another House panel unanimously passed a bill that would decriminalize cannabis possession in the state while providing a pathway for records expungement.

The proposed medical marijuana expansion legislation has been scheduled for debate and voting by the full House of Representatives on April 11, 2023. If passed, it would take effect starting on September 1, 2023.

Advocates for medical marijuana in Texas are urging supporters to contact their representatives and vote "yes" on this crucial legislation. If approved, this would be a significant step forward in expanding access to medical marijuana for Texans who need it the most.
