Chronic pain Can be Eased with Cannabis.

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Cannabis contains active compounds called cannabinoids, which interact with the body's endocannabinoid system. This system plays a role in pain regulation, among other things. When you use cannabis, the cannabinoids can help reduce pain by interacting with the receptors in your brain and body that are responsible for processing pain signals. This can help alleviate chronic pain, particularly neuropathic pain that is not well managed by other therapies.

Medical cannabis, has been used for centuries to relieve pain, yet current laws are somewhat constrictive, depending on where you live.

Here are two recent studies that demonstrate how medical cannabis can help with chronic pain:

  1. A study published in the Journal of Pain in 2015 found that medical cannabis use was associated with significant reductions in chronic pain, including neuropathic pain, that were not fully responsive to other treatments. The study surveyed 1,276 patients who used medical cannabis to treat chronic pain, and found that 62.2% reported significant improvements in pain relief, and 45% reduced their opioid use. The authors concluded that medical cannabis is a safe and effective treatment option for chronic pain that is not well managed by other therapies.

  2. Another study, published in the European Journal of Pain in 2017, found that vaporized cannabis reduced chronic neuropathic pain in patients with multiple sclerosis. The study involved 128 patients who were randomized to receive either cannabis or placebo, and found that those who received cannabis experienced significant reductions in pain compared to the placebo group. The authors concluded that vaporized cannabis is a safe and effective treatment option for neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis.

Overall, these studies suggest that medical cannabis can be an effective treatment option for chronic pain, including neuropathic pain that is not well managed by other therapies.

To get started, do more research, talk to your healthcare provider, check your state's laws and availability, start with a low dose, and keep track of your symptoms. With the right guidance, medical cannabis can help improve your quality of life and alleviate chronic pain.
