Cannabis and Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of the three major types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common. Each year, about 4.3 million adults are treated for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, costing around $5 billion.

However, a 2022 study published in the journal Cancers, entitled "Impact of Cannabinoid Compounds on Skin Cancer," has investigated the potential of cannabinoids produced by cannabis and hemp in treating skin cancer. The study noted recent research indicating that cannabinoids play an essential role in maintaining various skin functions and could be considered for the treatment of skin tumor diseases.

The study examined the role of the dominant cellular receptors of the endocannabinoid system, CB1 and CB2, and found that inhibiting cannabinoid receptors could be an option to prevent skin cancer caused by UV radiation. The researchers also found that CBD has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, making it a protective agent for skin cancer prevention. Additionally, the endocannabinoid anandamide produced by the human body exhibited anti-tumor activity against melanoma cancer and demonstrated concentration-dependent cytotoxicity through the mechanism of apoptosis.

The study concluded that cannabinoids could slow or prevent the growth of skin cancer cells and may be a promising option for the treatment of melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

More public research is necessary, particularly clinical trials involving humans, to fully understand the potential role of marijuana- and hemp-derived cannabinoids in the treatment of skin cancer.

While skin cancer is a prevalent disease, cannabinoids derived from cannabis and hemp have shown promise in inhibiting the growth of skin cancer cells.
